Description

Using a rich yellow to offset the angled shadows of New York City's skyline, Austrian-born Mark Freeman renders his beloved adopted city in the large-format "Manhattan Towers". Alternatively titled "Manhattan Cliffs" and "Concrete Cliffs", this work shows Freeman's ability to study architecture as some might a natural landscape, mapping its evolution as styles and urban needs change like the seasons.

Multiple editions and various proofs of "Manhattan Towers" appear to have been printed by Freeman over the years, some without the yellow background. Impressions with the yellow background have been found dating to 1936 as well as 1952, as with this impression.
