Description
A depiction of the Fontaine de l'Observatoire, located in the Jardin Marco Polo in Paris. Also known as the Fontaine des Quatre-Parties-du-Monde (Fountain of the Four Parts of the World) the dancing figures surrounding and supporting a celestial globe represent Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. Seen at the end of the tree-lined avenue beyond is Luxembourg Palace. Throughout the image are sightseers and dog-walkers, enjoying a sunny day in the park.
In his typical fashion, David's composition is a pleasing textural palette of delicate, sharp lines clustered in such a way as to appear soft and vibrant, nearly watercolor-like.
