Le Petit Sou (The Little Penny) Journal of Social Defense was a French daily socialist newpaper written by leaders of the Marxist French Worker's Party, which became the Socialist Party of France. According to the Interntational Socialist Review, Vol. III, July, 1902, the publication shut down in 1902. It's unclear if the newspaper was revived, though suggestion of its existence from 1900 to 1914 is found elsewhere. Funded and directed by Alfred Edwards, it attracted like-minded politicians and thinkers Jules Guesde, Paul Lafargue, Paul Brousse, and others, but it failed to gain strong distribution.
This image was originally done as a poster by Thepohile Steinlen with a header and footer describing the date of, cost of, and contributers to the newspaper. It features Marianne, the symbol of French freedom, leading the workers' rebellion against the oppressive powers of the state, symbolized by the Basilique du Sacre-Coeur.
