Description
"Where the Two Came to Their Father: A Navaho War Ceremonial Given by Jeff King," presented by Maud Oakes and Joseph Campbell. A portfolio of 18 color screenprints and text by Maud Oakes (ethnologist and artist) recording the blessing ceremony for Navaho men drafted during World War II. The eighteen screenprints are reproductions of the original sand paintings by medicine man, Jeff King (1867-1964). Joseph Campbell provided the commentary. Published in 1943 by the Bollingen Series I, Pantheon Books, New York. Oakes spent three years on the Navaho Reservation, during which she copied in gouache on deer hide the original "paintings" executed in sand, pollen, corn meal, or ground flowers. The eighteen screenprints are based upon her gouache copies.
