Biography

Raoul Frank, landscape and marine painter, was born in Linz, Austria, on May 1, 1867. He studied painting in Graz, Berlin, and London. He then studied with Gustav Schönleber at the Academy in Karlsruhe from 1891-1994. Frank moved to Munich where he was a professor at the Munich Academy and became a member of the Luitpold Group, a community of visual artists who advocated moderately modernist goals and championed high artistic quality.

He exhibited one painting at the Glasgow Institute and another at the International Society between 1904-06. His work was included in the 1906 Munich Fine Art Exhibition at the Grafton Galleries, London.

From 1907 to 1910, Frank headed the set design department at the Vienna Burgtheater. His design talents also lead him to applied arts and he also worked as an architect.

Frank’s paintings were included in exhibitions in Munich, Berlin, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Prague, and Vienna. In 1927, he was represented in the 7th Annual International Water Color Exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Raoul Frank died January 13, 1939 in Oberalm, Austria.
