Biography

Achille Devéria, painter, printmaker, book illustrator and stained-glass designer, was born in Paris on February 6, 1800. His full name was Achille Jacques-Jean-Marie Devéria and he studied with Louis Laffite and Girodet. Devéria excelled at portraiture and is known for his portraits of contemporary writers and artists, including portraits of Victor Hugo, Lamartine, Vigny, Dumas and Liszt. Several of his portraits and his 1844 cartoon, Généalogie d’Abraham, for four stained glass windows are in the Cleveland Museum of Art. In 1848, he was appointed assistant curator of the Cabinet des Estampes in Paris and then curator in April 1857. Later that same year, Archille Devéria died in Paris on 23 December.
