Biography

Bertha Olga Vilhelmine Herlich Dorph (née Green), painter, designer, and organizer, was born June 9, 1875, in Copenhagen, Denmark. She studied privately with Harald Slott-Møller and Peter Ilisted between 1893 and 1897 and then spent a year in Berlin where she studied etching at the Schinkel-akademie. She first showed her work at the Den Frie Udstilling, a Danish artists’ association, in 1899. Her painting Et desøg hos den unge barselskone (A Visit to the Young Maternity Patient) was awarded the Thorvalden Medal from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1907.

With her husband, Niels Vinding Dorph, they ran an art school between 1902 and 1915. She became a member of the committee for the Draftsmanship and Industrial Design School for Women in 1915. This was of importance to her as entry into the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts was denied to women. Dorph was among the group of artists to attend the inaugural session of the Female Artists Society (Kvindelige Kunstneres Samfund) which took place in Copenhagen on 7 February 1916. Besides being a celebrated painter, Dorph worked as a designer in silverware and furniture.

Bertha Olga Vilhelmine Herlich Dorph died Hillerød, Denmark on February 25, 1960.
