Biography

Verla Mae Aiken was born Verla Mae Blue on September 15, 1915, in Orosi, California. Her parents were Elva Leta and Fred Blue. According to the 1930 census, Elva Leta Blue was widowed by the age of thirty-four. The family relocated to Oakdale in Stanislaus County and Elva Leta married George Duggins. Verla attended Oakdale High School and graduated on June 4, 1933. She was an avid athlete, playing baseball and basketball. Verla also attended the Modesto Junior College but it's not clear if she ever formally pursued art studies.
Verla Mae Blue married Maurice Mahon Aiken in July 1942 and the couple lived in Modesto for the rest of their lives, raising a family there. Their son Michael went on to become a professional dancer and choreographer on Broadway. Verla was known in the Modesto community for her involvement in the Scouts and in the Parent Teacher Association. She died on August 8, 1995.
