Biography

Printmaker Hachmi Azza was born in Larache, Morocco, in 1950. He studied at L'Ecole de Beaux Arts, Tetouan, Morocco, from 1965-1969, and held his first show in Tetouan in 1966. He then studied at the Academie Royale de Beauz Arts (1969 - 1972) and L'Ecole Nationale Superieure s'Architecture et d'Art Visuel (1972-1976), both in Brussels. It was at the latter that he was introduced to mezzotint, which then became his primary medium.

Azza has participated in solo and group shows throughout the world, including in Yugoslavia, Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, Iraq, Japan, Germany, Poland, the UK, and the US. A retrospective of his work was held at the Jordan National Fine Gallery of Fine Art, Jordan, in 2015. His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Skopje, Republic of Macedonia; Ekaterinaberg Museum of Fine Arts, Russia; Brussels Rotary Club, Belgium; Kruizenga Art Museum, Hope College, Michigan, USA; and the Museum of Bagdad in Munich, among others. He currently lives and works in Solingen, Germany, and has exhibited as recently as June of 2022 ("60 x 60 - The Wondering Mind", group exhibition, Art Gallery Largo, Varna, Belgium).
