Biography

Printmaker and painter Marcus de Bye, sometimes spelled de Bije or de Die, was born circa 1638 in the Hague, Netherlands, to Willem de Bye and Margaretha de Backer. Little is known of his life, save for his studies with Jacob van der Does whose style de Bye often emulated. Though he was trained in painting, his preferred medium was etching, and he often recreated the works of Paulus Potter and Markus Gerard. He was a member of the Haagse Confreriekamer van Pictura (the Hague Conference Hall of Pictures); he died circa 1688.
