Biography

Francisco Rodríguez Oñate, painter, muralist, and printmaker, was born in 1940 in Morelia, in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. Oñate received his formal art education at the Escuela Popular de Bellas Artes de la Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás where he studied under Alfredo Zalce, Roberto Martínez, and Javier Arévalo. Following graduation in 1965, he established his studio in Morelia to pursue his own vision of Michoacán culture through painting and printmaking. Oñate was director of the Centro Cultural Antiguo Colegio Jesuita, promoter of museum halls in Michoacán and co-promoter of the Museums of Contemporary Art in Pátzcuaro and Alfredo Zalce de Morelia. Oñata was included in more than seventy international exhibitions. Francisco Rodríquez Oñate died in 2019.
