Biography
Joel Cazaux, painter, printmaker, sculptor, and teacher, was born in Dinard, France on April 13, 1940. His earliest training began in 1955 when he studied at the École Corvisart d'Art Graphique in Paris. The following year Cazaux enrolled in the École Estienne where he graduated in 1960 as an offset chromist. He also studied with the Belgian painter Marc Stockman and he was active at Stanley William Hayter’s Atelier 17 in Paris between 1967 and 1968. Cazaux was Professor of Plastic Art from 1960 to 2000 at the École d'architecture Paris-Villemin (École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts).
Cazaux drew inspiration for his work from the symbols of the ancient Egyptian, Aztec and African civilizations and his sculpture often combines bronze, stone and wood. He stated, “I draw my imaginary world in primitive and archaic collective unconscious where our brain is always present.”
Cazaux’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in France, Germany and Switzerland.
