David Shapiro

1944-2014

Biography

Painter and printmaker David Shapiro was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1944. He earned his BFA from the Pratt Instutute and his MFA from Indiana University. He taught at John Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, IN (1966), Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI (1968-'69), University of Birdgeport, CT and simultaneously at the Pratt Institute, NY (1970-'71), Barnard College, NY (1971-'72), and Parsons School of Design, New York (1974-'80). He was known for his multi-media paintings that incorporated materials such as pumice and metal filings into the paint, as well as his subject matter: abstractions that were influenced by his studies in Hindu and Buddhist religions. He died in 2014.
