Biography
Printmaker and painter Judythe Oak Andraka (also known as Judith and Judy) was born Judith Oak on June 28, 1938 in Yonkers, New York. She earned her BA at Chestnut Hill College in Pennsylvania, and her MFA from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. In 1960 she married Romuald Andraka, and while she changed her last name, she continued to sign much of her work "Oak."
While living in Washington she founded Mezzanine Multiples, a fint print studio at the Torpedo Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia. She served as Chair of the Art and Music Department of Prince George's Community College in Largo, Maryland, and was a member of the Maryland Printmakers Association, the Washington Area Printmakers, and the Laurel Art Guild.
Andraka's early work focused on tonality and geometric simplicity, with serigraphs of buildings and other angular structures rendered in pale colors. Her focus eventually turned to landscapes and architecture within landscape, and her compositions became smaller and finitely detailed. This led to an interest in miniatures, reflected in the small-format landscapes, and she joined the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts. She remained active in the art world for the majority of her life.
Judythe Oak Andraka died on January 15, 2026.
