Raphael Sadeler, a.k.a. Raphael Sadeler I, a painter, printmaker and publisher, was born in Antwerp, Belgium in 1560. Raphael was in Antwerp during the Gilded Age of prosperity and culture. He was the brother of Johan and Aegidius and collaborated with Johan throughout his life. Raphael was active in Munich from 1588 but had settled in Venice in 1596. He moved back to Munich after Johan’s death in 1600. As a painter Raphael specialized in religious compositions and portraits. His was a prolific engraver as Le Blanc catalogued 126 of his engravings. Raphael Sadeler died in Munich in 1628.
