Printmaker Charles Jean Lous Courtry was born on March 11, 1846, in Paris, France. By age fourteen he was apprecnticed to an architect where he was introduced to drafting. He then studied painting and etching under Léon Gaucherel and Léopold Fleming. He focused on reproductive etchings of paintings and drawings by leading artists such as Thomas Couture, Mihaly Munkascy, and Joseph Israels, and over the span of his career he completed nearly 500 reproductive plates. He was a member of the French Etching Club and he exhited at the London Royal Academy. He died in Paris on October 31, 1881.
