Biography

Ben-Zion (Benzion Weinman), painter, printmaker, sculptor and teacher, was born in Stary Constantin, Ukraine, Russia. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1920 and settled in New York. He joined “The Ten,” a group of young artists, including Joseph Solman, who strived to create something new in art in the 1940s and it was during this time that he worked at Atelier 17.

Ben-Zion taught painting at Cooper Union between the years 1943 and 1950 and during the summer session at Ball State University in 1956. He was a member of the American Artists Congress and United American Artists.

His work is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Newark Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Phillips Collection, New York Public Library, Tel Aviv Museum and the Bezalel Museum and he received an American Jewish Congress award.
