Description

This color screenprint is based on the painting "Pas de Deux", a multi panel work commissioned by Esquire magazine in 1983. Each of the five sections depicts two figures, among them artists David Salle, Red Grooms and Francesco Clemente. 'Pas de deux', which translates from French as “step of two,” is a duet in which a male and a female dancer perform ballet steps together.

The subjects of the composition, the second in the series of five, are artist, gallery owner, and writer Danny Moynihan, who was born in London in 1959 and Laura Faber, a friend of the artist. Katz highlights the nuances of physical human contact and the clothing of his subjects, who wear fashions designed by Norma Kamali.

This impression is a Printer's Proof, numbered 3/4, an impression given to the printers as partial compensation for their assistance. In this case there were four printers assisting the artist at Styria Studio. The published edition was 150.
