Elaine de Kooning did a stint at Tamarind Institute in January of 1973 where she completed this color lithograph, "Arena II" by adding colors (grey, yellow-green, and blue) to the black stone of "Arena I."
This impression is the "Bon a Tirer" (BAT), the print that all others in the edition are compared to. On the verso of this impression is written, in pencil in de Kooning's hand:
"O.K. for run #4 - Elaine de Kooning" "Approved to print for run III - Elaine de Kooning" "Approved to print for run I and II - Elaine de Kooning". In total there are four original pencil signatures on this impression.
The total edition is comprised of a published edition of 20, the BAT (this impression), 5 Trial Proofs (TP), 2 Tamarind impressions (T), and 5 (V) Roman numeral impressions, for a total of 33.
