Description
Barbara Neustadt worked at Atelier 17 in New York in the early 1950s, after Stanley William Hayter had returned to Paris and re-established his famed workshop. Her focus remained on printmaking and she would go on to illustrate several art books, including A Dream of Love, a book of etching illustrating the poem of the same name by Norwegian-American poet Joseph Langland (1917 - 2007).

Langland, born and raised on a farm in Minnesota, often wrote odes to the landscapes, flora, and fauna of his youth. A Dream of Love, which meditates on the beauty and mythological nature of horses, remains among his most beloved works.

This livre d'artiste contains 18 etchings by Neustadt, a sculpted paper horsehead by the artist David Wright collaged and sewn around the cover, and an etched frontispiece also by artist Wright. The book, published by Pleiades Editions, is signed by both artists. It has 47 total pages printed on hand made waterleaf paper by Antonio Sarda of Crespia, Gerona, Spain, measuring approximately 10-3/8 x 27”, folded to 10-3/8 x 13-1/2”. Each etching was pulled by Neustadt and Wright and is pencil signed in the lower right margin and pencil editioned in the lower left margin. It was printed by the artist and Wright from zinc plates of varying sizes; letterpress printing by Steve and Meryl Chayt of Anachronic Editions. The volume has a hand sewn dust cover in paper relief and is portfolio bound, wrapped in its original glassine wrapper and contained in a linen covered clamshell box measuring 12-1/8 x 15-1/2 x 2-3/8".
