Description

This powerful, expressionist black and white monotype is by German printmaker Fritz Winkler. Winkler relies on an economy of line to explore the formal, graceful movement of the dressage. He uses the whole sheet of paper to restrain and control both the rider and the horse and capture a moment of tension.

As an equestrian sport defined by the International Equestrian Federation, dressage is "the highest expression of horse training" where "horse and rider are expected to perform from memory a series of predetermined movements."

Much of Winkler's graphic output seems to concentrate on the animal kingdom - horses, cows, birds etc.
