Description
Hayter moved to Paris in 1926 and, after meeting the engraver Joseph Hecht, began working in engraving, producing his first drypoint that same year. Boulevard Pasteur was completed in 1927, his 23rd print in what was to become an oeuvre of over 450. This print anticipates the Paysages Urbains portfolio of 1930, containing 6 Parisian architectural prints which began his movement toward the psychic automatism of the new Surrealist movement. The signs above the shop entrance include the words tabac, vins, liqueurs, fleurs, ecole, and the rest is unreadable. Today it is the locale of the restaurant Au Coin Boulevard, 59 Boulevard Pasteur at the corner of Rue Falguière, Paris, Île-de-France in Montparasse. It is near the Pasteur Metro station.
