Description

A bustling street in Peking in 1925. This is a western gate to the Outer City, adjacent to the ancient Forbidden City in old Bejing (Peking). The gate towers, watchtowers, and corner towers of the major gates of both the Inner city and Outer city were dismantled over time due to lack of funds for maintenance. But when the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, the majority of the moats and gate towers were extant, albeit in a dilapidated state.

According to the Miles catalogue raisonné the blocks were reprinted through 1936, for a total edition of 75. This impression is from an early printing. It is signed with red crayon in the lower right corner. This is one of 40 images she did in China.

This impression is pencil titled in an unidenified hand on the verso.
