Description

One of Jean Charlot's recurring themes, while he was in Mexico, was that of a child's first steps taken under the watchful eye of its mother. Three variations of this image, aside from the original painting from the 1930s, are listed in the Peter Morse catalogue raisonné. However, this is the only one to include the little folded-paper chicken in the lower right.

This impression was published by Associated American Artists in New York who, in the 1940s, was working to introduce Mexican prints to the United States. In the case of this image they worked with the Taller de Grafica Popular and Master Printer José Sanchez to print the edition with Charlot.
