Lionel S. Reiss grew up on Manhattan's Lower East Side where the East River provided summer recreation for many youngsters. Reiss spent most of his life in New York. As an artist, he was self taught but he supported himself with it for his whole life.
"Boys on Wharf" is an etching, warmed up by adding brown to the ink. The subject depicts 3 boys in weekend clothes, relaxing in the sun on a wharf, probably the docks on the Lower East Side. Their are no cares, just a moment in time. Reiss leaves the background and the foreground to the observer's imagination.
