Description

Claire Falkenstein (1908-1997) studied at Atelier 17 with S.W. Hayter where she learned experimental printmaking. She is highly regarded as a painter/printmaker but is also noted for her metal sculpture and jewelry. She would often "print" both, using the sculpture as the matrix, to create a three dimensional collagraph. Falkenstein learned the medium of lithography at ULAE in 1961 from master printer Robert Blackburn.

This Abstract Expressionist color lithograph is one from a series of prints done in the same personal visual language as her 3 dimensional works, using a gestural, calligraphic linear composition. The yellow background creates a dimensional element to the space, the black lines moving across the surface.
