French printmaker James Coignard's prints are sculptural, a kind of "Brutalist" approach using caborundum etching, engraving and collage to create a three dimensional surface, printed both relief and intaglio. He then collages on another small print using a cord to attach it to the support print.
The resultant work is like having a section of an ancient wall that has been plastered, painted, graffitied and postered. The title loosely translates to "An attack of red in A B".
This work was done in 2 states, black (Agression Noire) and in color such as this impression. This state adds the color, plus the orange-red line at the right center and the letters. The center figure, which is black in the first state, has been separately printed in color and stitched on to the surface of the print.
