In Yunker's first few years in New York, in 1947, he devoted some of his time to teaching at the University of New Mexico, where he was a visiting artist. He became deeply interested in monotypes and pastels, which was among the most accomplished examples of his work. Monotypes appealed to Yunkers because it came as a challenge while giving him endless possibilities of results. It was also a nice break from the systematic and meticulous ways of woodcuts.
