Description

"Canciones para Muertos" translates to "Songs for the Dead." This piece is an homage to Jose Montoya (1932-1913), professor of art at California State University - Sacramento, Chicano rights activist, and poet (including Poet Laureate of Sacramento, 2002 - 2004) from the Central Valley of California.

This homage, using sketetal 'calavaras' (skulls) to portray an event honoring a person's life, was popularized by Mexican printmaker Jose Guadalupe Posada who depicted vain skeletons dressed in clothing of the wealthy with large hats and fancy gowns. These images were adapted for the Mexican holiday "Dia de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead), a time to remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.

Emmanuel Montoya printed this using a black linoleum block and then hand coloring the image. Although done in an edition of 25 (this is number 3) each impression will vary in color.
