Description

Friedlaender's early etchings explored the animal world; fish, birds, cats, dogs and horses. This work, done in black and brown, was done in 1953 was an early venture by the printmaker into color and non-objective abstraction, both of which dominated in his later works.

This energetic etching of three horses kicking up their heels, their long necks and simplified bodies intertwined, differentiated by the direction of the etching lines, uses a brown ground to achieve a scraped background to contain the image within a surround.

In 1956 he did a second etching of the three horses, Schmucking 157. Both images were published by Galerie La Hune in Paris.
