Description
This drypoint depicts the Verneuil-sur-Avre Cathedal in Normandy, France. It is an excellent example of Chamberlain's mastery of drypoint and and his love for architecture. In 1939 John Taylor Arms etched the same subject, which he titled "Aspiration, La Madeleine..." but which printed the image of the cathedral in reverse. This impression is printed on a very thin sheet of laid paper with the watermark "Chiffon" which is barely visible in the upper left corner of the image. The plate cut the paper in the upper right corner, which has been re-inforced, the image itself is pristine. The print has been priced to reflect this minimal damage.
