Description
San Quentin State Prison has the last remaining prison art program in California. The current art program is called the Prison Arts Project and is funded by the non-proft, William James Association. In 2005, Katya McCulloch founded the printmaking class in which the inmates focus on making linocut prints and artists books. Bay Area artist, Art Hazelwood, has been a visiting artist at San Quentin since 2008. Several prints have been accepted for inclusion in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress, including Blocks off the Block, a hand-bound and hand-printed book of original linocuts published in 2010 in an edition of 35.
