Known for his restoration of the Knott's Berry Farm 'Calico Ghost Town', von Klieben was an Austrian artist who came to the U.S. in the early 20th century. For over ten years he was the resident artist at Knott's, until his death in 1953. This sketch may possibly have been a preliminary study for a character in the Ghost Town.
