"Summer Storm, N.M." (New Mexico) is the final lithograph Kanemitsu did while at Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque in August of 1975. He was one of the first printmakers to work with Tamarind in Los Angeles in 1961.
This impression is the "Bon a Tirer", (Good to Print), the impression used to measure all the impressions from the edition against. The edition was printed on Arjomari Arches paper by the artist and Tamarind Master Printer Glenn Brill using black ink. The edition is composed of a published edition of 20 impressions, the B.A.T. (this impression), 3 trial proofs, 2 Artist's Proofs, 2 Tamarind proofs, and 7 proofs numbered I to VII.
Kanemitsu, using liquid tusche brushed onto the stone, creates an abstract expressionist response to the severe thunderstorms that occur throughout New Mexico, especially between April and June that move into "Monsoon Season" from June through September. The composition feels as if the viewer is observing the storm through a rain-streaked windshield. Above the black clouds, a darkened sun is visible.
This impression was from the collection of the printer, Glenn Brill.
