Little is known of Ralph Peplow’s career after the 1950s, as the only evidence of his professional exhibitions was taken from a list that ends in 1952. However, what is available to view makes it clear that Peplow had a keen eye for composition no matter what the medium, having worked in oils, serigraphy, lithography, and ink and graphite drawing. Subject matter ran the gamut as well, from lush, Impressionistic landscapes to dynamic, non-representational Abstraction - and, as seen in this black and white lithograph, he had a sense of humor and charm. Peplow takes an unusual if mundane subject - a resting, rotund frog - and makes it worthy of inspection by the elevated art world by viewing it through a fractal Cubist lens.
