Description

A page on horseback reaches for a glass of Hanappier cognac from a noblewoman, the advertisement suggesting that such a digestif will warm the heart and give the imbiber courage. The Bordeaux-region cognac is named for the Orleans master silversmith Jacques Hanappier and was founded in 1590.

The artist, who often went by the nom de plume Henri Guydo, was in fact the baron Joseph Robert Guillaume Le Barrois d’Orgeval (French: 1868 - 1930). A painter, he used the pseudonym to sign his satirical and commercial works. He was a prolific cartoonist and illustrator, contributing to nearly 40 French periodicals.
