This early etching by German born French printmaker Johnny Friedlander was printed on a thin sheet of laid paper and collaged to a heavier sheet of white wove to give it support. Most of Friedlaender's graphic output was abstract but he did a number of compositions throughout his career that included abstracted animals, especially horses.
"Les Deux Chevaux I" depicts a battle between two stallions, both rearing up on their hind legs as they try to subdue each other. The subject of battling horses, symbols of strength and speed, battling for dominance, is a subject that recurs through art history worldwide.
