Eliza Draper Gardiner was a part of the Provincetown Printmakers and her Arts & Crafts prints were first influenced by Arthur Dow and his instruction book for teachers titled "Composition". This image is listed in the Peter Hastings Falk 1987 catalogue "Eliza Draper Gardiner: Master of the Color Woodcut" as a black and white woodcut. However, at least this impression has a tan "tint block", an uncut block printed as a solid color.
This woodcut of a "Cobbler" is unusual for Gardiner who is best known for her Provincetown color woodcuts of children and landscapes. This may be her only image of an adult at work and probably represents a very personal relationship with the subject.
