Biography

Richard Benjamin Royce was born in New York on August 18, 1941. After getting his BA and MA in fine art at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he studied printmaking with Alfred Sessler and Warrington Colescott, he went to France to study with Stanley W. Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris. On returning to the US he taught printmaking at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles (1967-1969). At this time he was asked to help work on Roy Lichtenstein’s first woodcut at Gemini GEL.

This led him to open a studio, Atelier Royce, where he produced etchings, cast paper, paintings and sculptural commissions of his own work while at the same time helping artists to realize works in various media. Atelier Royce moved from Santa Monica to Oregon and then to New York. Atelier Royce printed for other artists including Roy Lichtenstein, Larry Rivers, Marisol, George Segal, Raphael Soyer, Francoise Gilot and Jim Rosenquist, Hamaguchi and many others.

Royce is also an accomplished classical guitarist, specializing in Flamenco learned from Aron Gilmartin as well as classical artist Jose Barossa, Blues artist Jo Mack, and Jazz artist Freddy Kaya.
