Biography

Painter, printmaker, and sculptor Agnes Eunice Mills was born Agnes Karlin in New York on April 2, 1915. Her early formal art studies took place at the Pratt Institute, where she received her BFA, and the Cooper Union. She was also mentored by artist Hans Hoffman through the WPA where she was then hired as the youngest instructor, along with Ruth Gikow, at the project in theater set design and mural painting. At this time she also became a member of the Bauhaus "Design Laboratory" from 1936 - 1938. Later studies took her to C.W. Post College, Hofstra University, American Artists School, and the NYU School of Architecture and Applies Arts.

Her work often centered around themes of dance and theater, and she was commissioned by the Alwin Nikolai Dance Company to design sets as their resident artist for 25 years. This led to further commissions by other dance companies with an interest in having her capture their rehearsals in drawings, prints, and sculpture. These would often go to major venues such as the Lincoln Center, the New York Public Library, and City Center Gallery, among others.

Agnes Eunice Mills died in Sebastopol, California on March 9, 2008.
