Biography

William Evan Charles Morgan trained at the Slade School of London under Henry Tonks. During a time of dramatic change in the art world, and in the face of Abstractionism's mounting popularity, Morgan's work favorably argued the relevancy and lasting beauty of classicalism. He was awarded the Prix de Rome for wood engraving in 1924, ahead of many of his contemporaries whose careers had already been established.

His career was relatively short-lived. His most prolific period was the early 1920s through the early 1930s. Following this, failing eyesight and a general decline in the printmaking market lead to his early retirement from the art world. He moved to Switzerland, where he died in 1979.
