Biography

Painter and printmaker Juan Manuel Gomez-Quiroz was born in Santiago de Chile on February 20, 1939. He studied at the Gregorio de la Fuente workshop in 1956 and enrolled at the School of Fine Arts, University of Chile, the following year. In 1962 he traveled to Rhode Island on a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the School of Design, and then again to Yale University's School of Art and Architecture. Finally, he settled in New York, where he took courses at the Pratt Graphic Center.

From 1969 to 1976 he served as adjunct professor of art at New York University. He was a member of the jury at the Arts Olympics event and in 1988 he taught at the Fashion Institute of Technology's Printmaker Workshop in New York. The Museum of Contemporary Hispanic Art hired Quiroz as curator and administrative assistant in 1986. In addition to printmaking and painting, he was an avid reader and self guided student of literature, and in 1971 he began exploring art book techniques, employing his knowledge of sculpture to create a three dimensional book of poems by Pablo Neruda. From 1986 to 1988 he served as president of the HH Silverman Publishing Company, and between 1995 and 2000 he was director of the Writer's Space at Hostos Community College.

He currently lives and works in New York.
