Shelter Island is a city at the eastern end of Long Island in the state of New York. Charles Dean, a New York based collector, invited McClintock to visit Manhattan and Orient, a hamlet on Long Island. McClintock enjoyed gathering with Dean's friends on Long Island and his work, Shelter Island, is a response to this new environment and the red rectangle represents the house of one of his new acquaintances.
