Description

Lois S. Keeler gained notice for her pioneering style when Carl Zigrosser chose her theorem print “Light and Shade” for Weyhe Galleries’ American Artist Group’s annual Christmas card. The style, which had roots in 19th century white velvet “paintings”, done using stencils and paint, was updated by Keeler to include her own handmade brushes and stencils cut from celluloid, and her use of pastel pigments. She would then go through each carefully constructed print and accent the work with pencil and ink.

In the luminous “Blue Tulip” Keeler’s eye for fine detail and delicate hand are showcased in the stylized bulb flower’s gently sloped form.
