Description

Wood-engraver Richard Wagener did this image in 2012. It depicts Hetch Hetchy lake in the Sierra Nevadas. Wagner used two blocks to create the composition, they are separated by a thin line near the center. Careful analysis reveals that the delicate lines that are used for the landscape appear to be continuous, but are not, the viewer's eye unites them. Wagner changes the directions of the lines to create the rocky facets of the granite walls.

Hetch Hetchy is a reservoir lake located in what was Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park at a height of 3900 feet. It was created in 1938 with the creation of the O'Shaughnessy Dam, which blocked the Tuolumne River. It provides water 167 miles west to San Francisco and its client municipalities in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.

Wagner's view of the mountain landscape includes Kolana Rock at the right, a prominent granite dome located along the southern edge of Hetch Hetchy Valley. The lake is in the foreground.
