Description
Muir Woods National Monument is named after the naturalist and founder of the Sierra Club, John Muir. It is a part of the National Park Service on the Pacific coast of southwestern Marin County, California, 12 miles north of San Francisco and part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Giant redwoods populate Muir woods and Pollak, in this almost abstract aquatint, gives the sense of scale of the trees by showing the lower portion of a gnarled trunk. In the background, in a small glen, people have gathered for a picnic. This print is unique amongst Pollak's prints, a pure landscape rather than the cities, portraits and figures that dominate the rest of his work.
