Description
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was born on May 8, 1753, near Guanajuato, Mexico and he died on July 30, 1811, in Chihuahua. He was a Roman Catholic priest who witnessed the oppression of his parishioners by the Spanish authorities and on September 16, 1810, he led people in a revolt for racial equality and redistribution of land. Despite being defeated and killed, Hidalgo became a symbol of Mexican independence.
