Description
This rare, important early California AbEx color lithograph was done in 1953 when De Forest was studying at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. The lithography classes were taught by James Budd Dixon and included other California Abstract Expressionsts Sonia Gechtoff, James Kelly, Julius Wasserstein, Deborah Remington and David Simpson. We have had another impression of this image, which was titled "Speak Spot" and editioned "1/5". This impression is now in the collection of the Whitney Museum. This impression is definitely real, the signature appears to have been put on by someone else, unless it was signed by the artist near the end of his life, which is possible. The title on the impression, "Comp B", makes no sense. The condition is generally very good for a work from this period. There is some slight yellow staining in the upper left margin, perhaps a bleeding from the ink. A full report is available on request.
