Description
This lithograph is from a suite of 10 color lithographs that was accompanied with text by Antoine Terrasse. The project was a collaboration between Pierre Bonnard and Jacques Villon with Villon recording Bonnard's gouaches on the stones. The maquette was retouched and reworked by Bonnard until he was satisfied. The idea was conceived by Bonnard's dealer, Louis Carre, and the lithographs were executed between 1942 and 1946. Bonnard did not wish to travel to Paris from Le Cannet to use a litho press, but agreed to collaborate with Villon, whom he admired. Villon had equal admiration of Bonnard's work and they were able to work together until Bonnard got what he wanted. Each color lithograph is signed by Bonnard with his monogram and was published in an edition of 80.
