Description
Baumann responded to a global event with his 1957 holiday card. The Russian satellite Sputnik, the first artifical earth satellite, was launched October 4, 1957. Sputnik orbited the earth every 96.2 minutes and sent out radio pulses that were monitored by scientists and amateur radio operators. These signals were sent for twenty-two days until the batteries died on October 26, 1957.
